This thickened paving infrastructure hybridizes sidewalk, park, and tactile navigational cues. A flexible system of reusable molds creates a modular landscape. Each unit has four sides that can be either “open” or “closed.” Like a game of dominoes, this landscape of flows can be extended by connecting similar edges. Constructed out of different earthen mixtures that range in durability, the new ground evolves over time: sprouting, growing, eroding. Here, the movements of pedestrian and vehicular flows carve topographies of embedded velocities. Eddies amidst these trajectories become moments of stasis: vegetated islands for repose and leisure. Adaptable and extendable, the modular landscape plugs into the existing texture of the city on a variety of scales, ranging from the replacement of individual sidewalk tiles to the super-block.
